You should have about a year on the defensive and only have a few islands to defend, so having infantry forward deployed once you start island hopping is probably a good thing. I used massive militia formations deep inside China and manchuria to good effect with low supply requirements.įor the USA though, I think you could go either way. I also tend to build a lot of militia as well (never spending much at any given time mind you), so the techs are not wasted.

I never research anything in advance, to its easy to keep up.

I normally research infantry tech first, and then later in the 2 year cycle, fill in militia techs the best I can. I seldom have much issue with research for militia techs.

For the cost (cheap) I use garrison to free up the IN and MAR units to focus on offensive operations. I would rather have my IN on mainland Asia and my SNLF (MAR) free to seize/deny key ports. To me, the goal isn't to win on the beach, rather delay the assault long enough to allow naval forces to attack the beachhead. Finally, sprinkle 1xGAR detachments on other not critical ports to delay any surprise landings.

I also do my best to upgrade coastal fotresses at key locations. I won't add AA unless I have a pure 3xGAR division already, due to the crazy fact that a 2xGAR + AA division will commit seppuku (retreat) as soon as the AA BDE gets to 0 ORG. I also often build two basic division types, 3xGAR and 2xGAR+AA. On the attack island hopping, I usually find the pace of operations more limited by my ability to garrison new islands than by anything else. With a massive amount of manpower under the current settings its doesn't hardly cost anything to constantly chug out garrison units. Myself, I tend to continually produce garrisons when I play Japan.
